Trust in veterinary medicine is essential. Trust is the foundation for every relationship, transaction and decision.

Trust is essential in every relationship. It does not matter if we are talking about personal, professional or even the relationship with your pets! So how do we build trust? One of my favorite books on the subject is by David Horsager and is called "The Trust Edge." In my opinion, this book is a must-read for all veterinary leaders looking to grow and improve their leadership skills. In this book, Horsager introduces the concept of the 8 pillars of trust, which he argues are essential for building trust and credibility within an organization. These pillars include clarity, compassion, character, competence, commitment, connection, contribution, and consistency.
One of the key takeaways from "The Trust Edge" is that trust is not just a feeling, but a measurable asset that can be built and strengthened. Horsager argues (and I agree) that trust is the foundation of all successful relationships, whether they be between individuals, teams, or entire organizations. He also emphasizes that trust is essential for achieving goals, fostering innovation, and creating a positive work culture. Think about it...don't things move faster and more comfortably when there is trust?
The 8 pillars of trust introduced in the book are particularly relevant to veterinary leadership. Clarity, for example, is essential for effectively communicating with team members and clients. Compassion is crucial for building strong relationships with patients and their owners. Character, competence, commitment, connection, contribution, and consistency are all important for building trust within a veterinary practice and ensuring that the needs of patients and their owners are met.
Overall, "The Trust Edge" is an insightful and practical guide for veterinary leaders looking to improve their leadership skills and build trust within their practice. The 8 pillars of trust introduced in the book provide a valuable framework for understanding the importance of trust in veterinary leadership and how to cultivate it. This book is highly recommended for all veterinary leaders looking to grow and improve their practice.
